Waiting for the perfect light, temperature, weather and “snow-stick” conditions, I molded a full alphabet on my porch railing and took reference shots of individual letters to possibly use in forming the physical dna of a new typeface. I can sometimes spend a bit too much time immersed in digital toolsets, and find it integral to take the time to work with raw materials and explore media by way of physical properties and real-world constraints.

PROJECT: “MONSTERS”

Collaboration with New Orleans sculptor Edouard Crago in bringing his sculptural work into the realm of motion-based narrative. His sculptures involve the creation of dioramas of genetically spliced, enhanced, altered and combined forms of new patented life.

The video “hummingbug” pulls from the artist’s vision of a large genetic research and patenting corporation creating life forms for clients in the defense, research and security industries. Some of the organization’s research has “leaked” in the form of at large newly-invented life forms. One of these is a flying cross-breed (thought to involve several aggressive species of hard-shell beetle and the common hummingbird). The narrative involves raw footage filmed on a cellphone by curious hikers along the southernmost shores of lake Michigan.
